Routing and Forwarding
Default gateway propagation#
By default, all layer 3 site to site networks are controlled via BGP relationships between NFRs in the network backbone and EVXs at the customer site edge.
With a standard internet connection, the EVX is the default gateway for the customer firewall and in most cases this is statically configured. (Options do exist for BGP relationships from EVX to firewall.)
But with a site to site WAN, where internet access may be provided centrally, or even through a third party connection to the network backbone, its important that the default gateway gets propagated to the right equipment.
NFRs will propagate a default route as necessary from a service edge endpoint in the network backbone, to the EVXs and other NFRs in the network. Internet traffic from clients will therefore take the correct route from site out to the internet and without manual static routes.
Redundancy#
Multiple routes can be set to redundant equipment in the network backbone, so that the principles of resilience and uptime are maintained, along with 100% automation in the event of component failure.
